Transparent, year-normalized comparison of journalist-safety incidents in Ethiopia, with harmonized taxonomy and reproducible R scripts.
# Ethiopian Journalist Safety — Period Comparison (1992–2018 vs 2019–2024)
**Project status:** This repository accompanies a research project **accepted for publication in _Journalism Practice_**. In addition to the quantitative analysis hosted here, the study includes a **qualitative component** analyzing the **lived experience of Ethiopian journalists during the political transition** using **phenomenological methods**.
## Overview
This project quantifies and contextualizes **safety-related incidents involving journalists** in Ethiopia across two political periods:
- **Period A (EPRDF): 1992–2018** — 27 years
- **Period B (Prosperity Party): 2019–2024** — 6 years
To fairly compare windows of unequal length, the headline metric is **incidents per year**, complemented by **type composition**, a **closure-like flag** (license suspensions / renewal denials / bans / revocations), and a transparent **severity index**.
## Mixed-Methods Design
- **Quantitative (this repo):** Event-level dataset harmonized into a common taxonomy (e.g., `arrest_detention`, `prosecution_*`, `attack_assault`, `abduction_kidnapping`, `license_suspension`, `license_renewal_denial`). Outputs include incidents-per-year, type shares, closure-like share, and severity-per-year, plus a sensitivity check excluding **2020–2022** (conflict years).
- **Qualitative (in the paper):** A **phenomenological analysis** of journalists’ lived experiences while practicing during the transitional period. This strand explains mechanisms behind the quantitative patterns (e.g., how licensing actions or arrest risk shape newsroom routines and personal safety).
