African languages Mapped # African Languages Dashboard An interactive dashboard showcasing the linguistic diversity of Africa, including language locations, endangerment status, and density distributions. ## Features - **Interactive Map:** A clustered map using Leaflet.js (Folium) that groups languages by region. Click on any language marker to see its name, family, country, and endangerment status. - **Density by Country:** A choropleth map showing the count of distinct languages within each African nation. - **Density Heatmap:** A heatmap visualization highlighting areas of high linguistic concentration. ## How to Use ### 1. Installation Ensure you have the required Python libraries installed: ```bash pip install pandas plotly folium ``` ### 2. Generate the Maps If you update the `languages_with_country.csv` data, regenerate the dashboard visualizations by running the unified build script: ```bash python build_site.py ``` This script processes the data and updates the following files: - `african_languages_interactive_map.html` - `african_languages_choropleth.html` - `african_languages_heatmap.html` ### 3. View the Dashboard Simply open `index.html` in any modern web browser to explore the interactive dashboard. ## Hosting on GitHub Pages This project is designed to be hosted easily on GitHub Pages as a static site. 1. **Commit and Push** your files to a GitHub repository. 2. **Enable GitHub Pages:** - In your repository's **Settings**, go to the **Pages** section. - Under **Build and deployment > Branch**, select `main` (or `master`) and the `/ (root)` folder. - Click **Save**. 3. Your dashboard will be available at `https:// .github.io/ /`. ## Data Source Language data is sourced from Glottolog.
