Exploring solar energy growth, renewable energy adoption, and energy transition trends across Africa.
# Africa Solar Energy Analysis
## Project Overview
Africa has significant solar energy potential, yet the adoption of solar power varies widely across countries. This project analyzes solar electricity generation data trends across African countries using Python and publicly available solar energy data.
The study examines how solar generation has changed over time, identifies the leading solar-producing countries in Africa, and evaluates Ghana's progress in solar energy development. Data cleaning, ranking, trend analysis, and visualization techniques were used to generate insights into renewable energy deployment across the continent.
The findings provide evidence of Africa's ongoing energy transition and highlight opportunities for expanding solar energy to support sustainable development, energy security, and climate action.
## Objectives
* Analyze solar electricity generation trends across African countries using publicly available dataset.
* Identify the leading solar producing countries in Africa and compare their generation levels.
* Examine the growth of solar electricity generation in Ghana and assess changes over time.
* Compare solar energy development patterns in Ghana, South Africa, and Egypt.
* Generate data-driven insights to support discussions on renewable energy adoption, sustainability, and Africa's energy transition.
* Explore the implications of solar energy growth for climate action, energy security, and sustainable development.
## Dataset
The analysis used solar electricity generation data compiled by Our World in Data from Ember (2026) and the Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy (2025). The dataset contains annual solar electricity generation records for countries and regions worldwide and was filtered to include African countries with reported solar generation data.
