This project evaluates the effectiveness of levees versus riparian buffers in reducing spatial flood extent along River Nabuyonga in Mbale City, Uganda. Flooding in this region has intensified due to climate change, rapid urbanization, and environmental degradation, making it critical to assess sustainable flood mitigation strategies.
Objectives: Identify key factors influencing flood occurrence in the Nabuyonga catchment, Quantify floodplain reduction from:Levees (structural measure) and Riparian buffers (nature-based solution). Assess long-term (10+ years) performance of both interventions
Methodology: Geospatial analysis (ArcGIS pro), weighted overlay analysis, Hydraulic modelling in HEC-RAS, Hydrological modelling in ArcSWAT and LSTM time prediction series
Key results:
Flood Drivers: Heavy rainfall is the dominant factor (30%)
Terrain and soil conditions significantly influence runoff and accumulation

Riparian Buffers ~26.35%. Riparian buffers are nearly twice as effective as levees.
