GIS-Based Site Suitability Analysis for Wind Energy Development in Nigeria # Wind-Energy-Development-in-Nigeria # GIS-Based Site Suitability Analysis for Wind Energy Development in Nigeria # I plan to investigate site suitability for wind energy development in Nigeria using data-driven spatial analysis techniques. # Research Questions: - Which geographic regions in Nigeria have the highest wind energy potential based on wind speed and power density data? - How do infrastructural factors such as road accessibility, proximity to transmission networks, and land use constraints influence site suitability for wind farm development? - What environmental and social factors (e.g., protected areas, population density) should be considered to ensure sustainable and equitable siting of wind energy projects? - How can multi-criteria GIS modeling help prioritize locations for both onshore and small-scale distributed wind systems? # Geographic and Temporal Scope: The study will cover the entire country of Nigeria, with particular focus on northern states such as Katsina, Sokoto, Kano, and Plateau, where preliminary data suggest favorable wind conditions. Temporally, the analysis will rely on recent climatological and infrastructural data (2010–2025) to reflect current and emerging trends in renewable energy expansion. # Data Requirements: To address these questions, the project will integrate multiple spatial and environmental datasets, including: - Wind speed and power density (from NASA POWER, Global Wind Atlas, or NREL datasets) - Topographic and land use data (from USGS or Copernicus Global Land Cover) - Infrastructure layers (roads, transmission lines, substations from OpenStreetMap or Nigeria’s Ministry of Power) - Population and environmental data (settlement patterns, protected areas from UNEP-WCMC and WorldPop) # Using GIS and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques, these datasets will be overlaid and weighted based on relevance to determine spatially optimal zones for wind farm development. # Anticipated Results and Visualizations: …
