# Daytime Land Surface Temperature Across Nigeria
An exploratory geospatial analysis of daytime Land Surface Temperature (LST) across Nigeria using MODIS Terra satellite observations from 1–26 August 2026.
## Overview
Land Surface Temperature provides information about the thermal conditions of the Earth's surface and can help reveal spatial variations in surface heating.
This project explores the spatial distribution of daytime LST across Nigeria during 1–26 August 2026. Daily MODIS Terra observations were processed in Google Earth Engine to produce mean and maximum daytime LST composites, which were subsequently mapped and visualised in ArcGIS Pro.
## Research Question
**How did daytime Land Surface Temperature vary spatially across Nigeria during 1–26 August 2026?**
The analysis considers:
- the spatial distribution of mean daytime LST;
- the distribution of maximum observed daytime LST; and
- geographical differences in surface thermal conditions across Nigeria.

## Methodology
The analysis was conducted using Google Earth Engine and ArcGIS Pro.
The main processing steps were:
1. Define the Nigeria study boundary.
2. Retrieve daily MODIS Terra MOD11A1 observations for 1–26 August 2026.
3. Extract the `LST_Day_1km` band.
4. Apply the MODIS `QC_Day` quality-control information.
5. Apply the MODIS scale factor and convert temperature values from Kelvin to degrees Celsius.
6. Mask values outside the selected physically plausible temperature range.
7. Generate a mean daytime LST composite.
8. Generate a maximum daytime LST composite.
9. Calculate summary statistics.
10. Export the resulting rasters as GeoTIFF files.
11. Produce the final cartographic visualisations in ArcGIS Pro.
