Inmarsat and Rwanda Mountain Tea (RMT) Limited collaborated to test LoRaWAN IoT devices within the latter's factory premises to supplement the tea processing criteria with the main aim of producing customer desired tea grades. In this phase of the project, we deployed an IoT framework and proof of concept solution to supplement the human sensory aspect in determining the optimum fermentation conditions of black tea. An optimum fermentation time was determined with the help of an electronic nose, image, temperature and humidity sensors that supplemented existing tea expert knowledge. A tailor-made one stop application was developed to extract the data and relay real-time monitoring through visualizations and predictive analytics to end-user remote, stationed and mobile platforms in the entire RMT work space.
