Cross-sectional, multi-country study on the distribution of plastic surgeons and capacity of plastic surgery in Sub-Saharan African. # Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Workforce and Capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa ## Overview This repository supports a multi-country assessment of the plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) workforce, service delivery, and facility capacity across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The study uses a cross-sectional survey of accredited plastic and reconstructive surgeons to characterize workforce distribution and density, surgical practice and workload, facility resources, and training capacity across the region. Data collection is planned for August–September 2026 using an electronic questionnaire administered through KoboToolbox. ## Research Questions This study seeks to answer the following questions: - How many plastic and reconstructive surgeons are currently practicing in Sub-Saharan Africa, and how are they geographically distributed? - What types and volumes of plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures are performed by accredited plastic surgeons? - In which facilities and sectors do accredited surgeons provide care? - What cross-country differences exist in workforce density, procedure volume, service availability, and training capacity? ## Objectives To assess the distribution, density, and capacity of the plastic and reconstructive surgery workforce and the facilities in which they practice across Sub-Saharan Africa through a multi-country survey of accredited plastic and reconstructive surgeons. ## Study Design This study employs a cross-sectional, multi-country survey design to assess the plastic and reconstructive surgery workforce and facility capacity across Sub-Saharan Africa. ## Study Setting The study will be conducted across countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular focus on countries affiliated with: - the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); and - the West African College of Surgeons (WACS). ## Sampling Strategy A purposive census sampling approach will be used.
