Learn Urhobo the playful way.
# Urhobo: River Kingdom 🦜
A playful, endless language-learning game for **Urhobo** — the Southwestern
Edoid language of Delta State, Nigeria (1M+ speakers) — built with Expo for
Android, iOS and web. Kids and adults paddle up a never-ending river of
levels, guided by **Ọmoko** the parrot (ómoko = parrot).
## What makes it special
- **Endless levels.** Levels are *generated*, not authored. Each one is a
session of mini-game rounds composed from templates Ă— a verified content
pool, with difficulty bands that unlock categories, tone marks, typing,
decoy tiles and timers. There is no final level by construction
(`lib/engine/levelGen.ts`).
- **A real Urhobo keyboard.** Standard keyboards can't type Urhobo. Ours has
first-class **Ẹ** and **Ọ** keys and every digraph (CH, DJ, GB, GH, GHW,
HW, KP, NY, PH, RH, SH, VW) as a single key; long-press a vowel for its
high tone (á). Used in typing rounds and the free practice pad
(`components/keyboard/UrhoboKeyboard.tsx`).
- **The game learns from the gamer.** A Leitner spaced-repetition system
schedules every word (`lib/engine/srs.ts`) while a weakness map watches
*which letters* trip you up — mix up ẹ/e and letter-hunt rounds start
targeting exactly that (`lib/engine/adaptive.ts`). All learning data is
on-device, timestamped and JSON-serializable, ready for a future cloud sync.
- **Kid & adult modes.** Kids get pictures, memory-flip games and no lives;
adults get tone-mark rounds, typing, timed rounds and hearts. Switchable in
Profile.
- **Record-your-own pronunciation.** No TTS exists for Urhobo, so the Word
Book lets players (or a native-speaking relative) record each word with the
mic. Recorded words unlock listening rounds.
- **Verified content only.** 420+ words and expressions, every entry sourced
from A.O. Ukere's *Urhobo–English Dictionary* (1986; web ed. Roger Blench
2005), Omniglot, or ubiquitous usage (Migwo/Vrendo). Each item carries its
`source` field (`lib/content/words.ts`).
