A platform connecting hospitals with surplus blood to hospitals facing shortages in Rwanda — with a donor pool layer for direct community contribution
# BloodLink
BloodLink is a platform designed to connect hospitals with surplus blood
supplies to hospitals facing shortages across Rwanda. It reduces critical
delays in blood availability by making inter-hospital coordination fast,
transparent, and trackable.
## Key Features
- **Hospital-to-hospital coordination** — hospitals with surplus blood can
be matched with hospitals in need, in real time
- **Donor pool layer** — community donors register once via a public form
(no login required) to be notified when their blood type is urgently needed
- **Hospital dashboards** — only hospitals have login access, with a
dashboard to manage requests, surplus listings, and donor notifications
- **Notification tracking** — a background notification log prevents
duplicate donor alerts and shows hospitals a live "donors notified" count
## Tech Stack
- Backend: Django, Django REST Framework
- Database: PostgreSQL
- Frontend: Next.js
- Version Control: Git/GitHub
## Problem It Solves
Blood shortages in Rwanda are often a distribution problem, not just a
supply problem — one hospital may have surplus while another nearby faces
a critical shortage. BloodLink closes that gap by making surplus visible
and donor mobilization fast when hospital stock alone isn't enough.
