HAALSI Dementia Wave 2

The Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community (HAALSI) Dementia study collects detailed neuropsychological and functional assessments, informant interviews as well as neurological and clinical evaluations on a sub-sample of HAALSI individuals aged 50 and older (see Figure 1 for summary). Wave 1 was conducted in 2019-2020, and the final sample included 635 participants who completed at least part of the study; 582 participants completed all three components of the study: cognitive battery, informant interview and neurological examination. All Wave 1 participants were invited to participate in Wave 2 of the Dementia study, which took place in 2022; additional participants were recruited from Wave 3 of the main HAALSI survey. The final sample included 683 participants who completed at least one section (513 longitudinal). Of those, 661 completed the neurological exam (469 longitudinal), 679 completed the informant interview (504 longitudinal), and 675 completed the respondent assessment (507 longitudinal). 653 participants completed all three components of the study.
