Information Needs and Sources of Postgraduate Students at Mzuzu University in Malawi

Abstract The study investigated the information needs and sources of postgraduate students at Mzuzu University in Malawi. Underpinned by Kuhlthau’s information search process model, the study used a quantitative approach. A questionnaire was sent to 50 postgraduate students pursuing a Master of Science in Water Resource Management and Development, and a Master of Science in Transformative Community Development. The study reveals that most postgraduate students seek information to accomplish academic purposes, including conducting research, updating their knowledge, and writing assignments. Open access databases, lecture notes, shelf browsing, and the lecturers’ recommended lists are the sources most consulted by students. E-journals, Google, E-books, and lecturers are the most preferred sources of information. In the information search processes, students experienced feelings of optimism, uncertainty, and anxiety as presented in Kuhlthau’s information search process model. Poor internet connectivity, expensive internet data bundles, and a lack of internet access are challenges students face.
