
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how humans write and communicate in digital environments. This paper introduces SaharaPen, a multilingual AI writing assistant designed by combining Large Language Models (LLMs) with a human-centered design philosophy inspired by Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines (HIG). Unlike existing tools that focus on individual features, SaharaPen integrates grammar checking, text rewriting, summarization, tone adjustment, and voice input into a minimalist and intuitive user interface (UI), optimizing user experience (UX) and reducing cognitive load. Notably, SaharaPen embodies a ‘technology Robinhood’ spirit, bringing advanced AI features previously limited to high-end devices to all users.
An empirical study with 90 participants across three languages (English, Vietnamese, French) showed that SaharaPen reduced grammatical errors by 40%, increased task completion speed by 25%, and achieved a satisfaction score of 4.5/5, outperforming Grammarly and ChatGPT under the same conditions (p < 0.05). A case study from an international project in the Sahara Desert further demonstrated its stable performance under harsh conditions, multilingual support, hybrid mode operation, and high security. The results suggest that integrating human-centered design principles with multilingual NLP can significantly enhance usability, adoption, and productivity in business, education, and engineering contexts.
