The recording at the center of this item is a procedural narrative. When the young man is ready for marriage, he begins to look for a suitable girl. When he finds a girl, he and his friends go to the village of the girl to speak to her about the matter. When the girl accepts the offer, she informs her mother who will in turn tell her husband. Then they discuss the matter, and when they agree, they choose a host who will accommodate the in-laws. The in-laws are officially welcome by “pedhi pyen” spreading the hide. After pedhi pyen, goats (30-40) and money (as requested by the girl’s parents) are brought. Then cows come at the end. The number of cows is determined by the king (now it is 10 cows only). The composer of this text has given many details in regard to marriage. So, enjoy it! This item consists of a recorded Shilluk narrative (wav file), accompanied with annotation (in Praat TextGrid) and associated information: metadata, permissions and speaker questionnaire. The associated information is also summarized, in a spreadsheet. The TextGrid annotation includes Shilluk orthography, translation, and comments.
