This deposit contains items 501 - 700 of a Kibiri wordlist. Additional wordlists are currently being processed. The items include kinship terms, animals, natural objects, and tools. The entire elicitation session has been uploaded in order to preserve the valuable lexical discussion it contains, including semantic clarifications and minimal pairs identified during the session. The phonetic transcription reflects the segments as perceived during analysis, while the tonal transcription represents the current surface tonal analysis. On the right side of the page, readers will find a downloadable .csv file containing all transcriptions and translations, including English and Hiri Motu translations, phonetic transcription, orthographic transcription, and tonal transcription. On the present page, the phonetic transcription is provided between brackets [ ], while the orthographic transcription appears in blue letters and follows the conventions described below. The orthographic representation adopted in this deposit reflects the current stage of analysis of Kibiri. Vowel length is phonemically contrastive only for /a/, /e/ and /u/ and is represented orthographically by doubled vowels (e.g. aa, uu, ee). According to the current analysis, Kibiri has three tonal melodies (H, HL, and LH), and the tone-bearing unit (TBU) is provisionally analysed as the syllable. High tone is represented by an acute accent (e.g. múi 'egg'), while the contour tones HL and LH are represented by a circumflex (e.g. êi 'land') and a caron (e.g. ěi 'breast'), respectively. Since Low tone is analysed as the default tonal specification, it is not orthographically marked. In vowel sequences that constitute a single TBU, a contour tone is represented by a single diacritic placed on the first vowel of the sequence (e.g. êi 'land', ěi 'breast'). Likewise, in long vowels, a single diacritic is placed on the first vowel letter (e.g. áaru '...'), regardless of whether the vowel length is phonemic or phonetic. These orthographic conventions reflect the current stage of analysis and may be refined as the documentation and analysis of Kibiri continue.
