Knowing Where to Turn: A Video Intervention on Intimate Partner Violence in Madagascar

Intimate partner violence often goes unreported because victims lack knowledge of what constitutes abuse and where to seek help. We randomize exposure to a 15-minute documentary video among 2,929 microfinance borrowers in Madagascar, within a platform where all social workers received enhanced training. Five to twelve months later, treated women are 17 percent more likely to know appropriate reporting procedures, with the largest gains for channels unknown at baseline, and lower their stated reporting threshold. Men show no improvement in knowledge or attitudes, and we detect no backlash. Embedding information in trusted institutions cheaply improves women's knowledge of reporting resources.
