Knowledge, attitude and practices on antimicrobial resistance among medical students in Africa: a systematic review protocol

Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a global public health threat contributing to over 1.27 million deaths in 2019. The knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) on AMR among medical students have a direct impact on the future of combating this global problem. Despite the presence of country-specific data on KAP among medical students, there still lacks a consolidated study synthesising this information in Africa. This study aims to assess the KAP on AMR among medical students in Africa. Methods This will be a systematic review of studies assessing the KAP on AMR among medical students in Africa. Relevant studies will be identified using PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Google Scholar and African Journals Online (AJOL) accessed via HINARI Access to Research for Development and Innovation programme or direct Open Access for PubMed, AJOL and Google Scholar. All searches will be conducted for studies published from 2015 to 2025. Both quantitative and qualitative studies will be included. A narrative synthesis will be conducted as well as a meta-analysis if data permitting the analysis will be obtained. Risk of bias will be assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist for cross-sectional studies. Ethics and dissemination This review involves synthesising data from existing studies; therefore, no ethical approval will be required. Our study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and international conferences.
