The verbal expression of madness or mental deficiency in the beti proverbs of south Cameroon
For the Betis of South Cameroon, «mental deficiency» is related to a particular conception of illness. Mental deficiency or madness are not yet treated medically. This anomaly is first of all a disorder disrupting the order of human beings (the social order) and the order of things (the cosmic order) before being acknowledged as an individual or hereditary suffering. The analysis of the Beti proverbs having to do with this type of disturbance shows to what extent this mental deficiency is socialized. This analysis also raises the problem of the nature of intelligence as a social standard of survival and adherence to the rules of the group. Any therapeutic initiative should take this information into account.
