This study examined land disputes and traditional methods of conflict resolution in Ikwerre Local
Government Area. The objectives of the study were to examine the major causes of land disputes,
identify the traditional methods used in resolving such disputes, assess the effectiveness of these
methods, examine the challenges affecting their use, and suggest ways of improving land dispute
management in the area. The study adopted a descriptive research design and a case study
approach. The population of this study comprises residents of Ikwerre Local Government Area
who have either experienced land disputes firsthand or possess substantial knowledge about how
such disputes are managed within their communities. This includes a range of stakeholders such
as elders, chiefs, family heads, youth representatives, and ordinary community members. Data
were collected from 150 respondents through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group
discussions using purposive and stratified sampling techniques. Findings revealed that boundary
disagreements and inheritance conflicts are the major causes of land disputes in Ikwerre LGA.
The study further showed that traditional conflict resolution methods such as mediation by elders
and chiefs, family arbitration, community assemblies, and oath-taking rituals remain widely used
and culturally accepted within the communities. The findings also indicated that traditional
methods are considered effective because they promote reconciliation, social harmony, and
community participation. However, challenges such as youth defiance, urbanization, political
interference, legal conflicts with statutory systems, and lack of proper documentation reduce their
effectiveness. The study concluded that traditional institutions continue to play a significant role
in land dispute management despite modern pressures. It therefore recommended the integration
of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms with formal legal systems, proper documentation of
agreements, policy support for traditional institutions and community sensitization to strengthen
dispute resolution processes and ensure sustainable peace in Ikwerre communities.
