The media is a vital part of demystifying complex climate and environmental concerns, serving as the primary conduit between the language of science and the general population. Although this medium is considered important, coverage of climate change in Nigeria has not led to sustained public participation in climate action. Media organisations are supposed to educate, inform, and mobilise citizens about acute environmental issues, but their ability to communicate climate issues to diverse and vulnerable communities has been limited. This paper explores how Nigerian media create climate action and the structural and professional factors that hinder effective climate communication. Based on existing empirical research and academic literature, the paper concludes that although both traditional and digital media platforms can raise awareness and influence climate discussions, their use is usually urban-centric, cyclical, and aimed at elite consumer groups. The paper also traces significant issues that have influenced the media's performance, such as insufficient climate journalism training, inadequate funding for coverage of environmental issues, political and institutional pressure, and poor partnerships among journalists, scientists, and policymakers. It also points to emerging opportunities to enhance climate communication through the growing influence of digital media, collaboration with global environmental organisations, and targeted capacity-building initiatives for journalists. The research finds that empowering media, enhancing climate journalism training, and diversifying communication can help enable the Nigerian media to take a more active role in promoting climate consciousness, citizen participation, and climate policy responsibility.
