The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming global education systems by improving teaching quality and professional development practices. In science education, where continuous updating of knowledge and pedagogical skills is essential, AI presents innovative approaches for strengthening Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of teachers. This paper examines AI as a transformative tool for enhancing CPD among science teachers in Nigeria. It highlights AI’s relevance in education, particularly its ability to support personalized learning, real-time feedback, data-driven decision-making, and collaborative professional engagement. CPD in Nigeria is hindered by limited access to training, inadequate infrastructure, irregular implementation, and theory-based approaches that are weakly linked to classroom practice. The study is grounded in Constructivist Learning Theory, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), and Adult Learning Theory, which explain how AI can enhance teacher learning and professional growth. Literature reviewed indicates that AI-enabled CPD systems provide scalable, flexible, and context-responsive training opportunities that improve teachers’ instructional competence and confidence in science education. However, challenges such as weak digital infrastructure, low AI literacy among teachers, resistance to technological change, ethical concerns, and insufficient policy frameworks may limit effective implementation. The paper concludes that AI offers a sustainable pathway for transforming CPD by making it more accessible, personalized, and data-informed. It recommends the development of national AI-in-education policies, investment in digital infrastructure, capacity building for teachers, integration of AI into teacher education programs, and establishment of strong ethical guidelines. Ultimately, AI-driven CPD can enhance science teaching quality and support sustainable national development in Nigeria.
