Management Status and Case Studies

Abstract This chapter describes four case studies of management of coral reefs and associated fisheries. The first two case studies cover management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): the national government programs of Kenya, and a private MPA in Zanzibar. The second two case studies cover different approaches to fisheries resource management: at the national level in South Africa and at the community level, supported by donor aid, in northern Tanzania. The case studies describe the origin of their specific management problems, trace the history, justification and objectives of management, and give recommendations for future programs.
