International audience In this second volume, we explore how the Tanzanian poet Mathias E. Mnyampala fits into the Swahili poetic tradition. We observe that his poetic innovations are formally rooted in classical Swahili poetry, specifically the “vina na mizani” tradition. Additionally, he integrates elements from the Wagogo traditions, including the practice of “ngonjera” (palabre as a jurisdiction of speech), and other elements like European theatre and Christianity. Through Mnyampala’s work, and by extension, the newly established Tanzanian socialist state, continuity is emphasized in the project of constructing a unified nation.
