Maximizing Clean Cooking Access in Kenya: An OnStove Assessment

Kenya aims to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2028. There are different cooking technologies in Kenya. In Kenya, 52.4% of the population cook using firewood, 11.9% charcoal & 3.9% kerosene. In this study 11 cooking technologies were considered. The study aimed at determining the clean cooking benefits that would accrue Kenyan households maximum net benefits if they were to transition to clean cooking. Four of the clean cooking technologies considered include electricity, LPG, ethanol LPG and biogas. Electricity, LPG and ethanol were determined to have the maximum net benefits for Kenyan households in both private and social scenario analysis. The results of the total costs from private scenario show that the investment costs from a household point of view are high, this presents affordability constraints. The government should consider subsiding LPG, and biogas, and incentivize e-cooking.
