While perhaps many Kenyans know that Kenyan Somalis have been discriminated against before and after independence, sometimes it is difficult to explain vividly how this discrimination has been advanced over the years. Early research work done about Kenyan Somalis mainly focused, for example, on feuding and differences among
Somali clans, or the xenophobia against Somalis, for example in South Africa and Kenya. Working in the media, as a journalist, I realised there were certain words which, perhaps, kept emerging now and then in the media, and which were associated with Kenyan Somalis, and not closely linked to other ethnic communities in Kenya. This triggered my initial thoughts in 2019, and on how I could conduct research that would eventually prove that historically, indeed, Kenyan Somalis have always been discriminated against, and that the media had effectively served as a tool for propagating this discrimination, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
