Migration, Remittances, and Economic Development in West Africa: A Historical Perspective

Migration has remained a significant feature of West African history, shaping patterns of economic exchange, social transformation, and regional integration. This paper examines the historical relationship between migration, remittances, and economic development in West Africa, with particular attention to the ways in which population movements have influenced household livelihoods, labour markets, and national economies. It traces migration from pre-colonial systems of mobility and long-distance trade through colonial labour migration to contemporary international and intra-regional migration. The study argues that remittances have historically served as important sources of household income, capital accumulation, education, healthcare, housing, and small-scale investment. However, their developmental effects have varied across societies depending on migration patterns, institutional structures, economic policies, and the availability of productive investment opportunities. Using a historical and qualitative approach, the paper draws on secondary literature, archival materials, and existing studies on migration and remittance flows in the region. It demonstrates that migration has simultaneously generated economic opportunities and challenges, including labour shortages, dependency, inequality, and brain drain. The paper concludes that effective migration governance, productive investment of remittances, regional cooperation, and policies supporting migrants can strengthen the contribution of migration and remittances to sustainable economic development in West Africa.
