This dataset covers a simplified model of the national electricity system of Egypt in 2018 made for IRENA FlexTool 3. Includes database file, Excel documentation and report of the case study made with the dataset. The database can be run with open and free IRENA FlexTool 3 that can be downloaded from: github.com (see instructions below).

The dataset is built based on the data by Ali et al. (2019), Open Infrastructure Map, and other open sources. The data is not comprehensive. The objective of the case study was to analyze the impacts of photovoltaic (PV) and wind integration to the existing 2018 power grid of Egypt towards 2023 and beyond, as well as to demonstrate the use of IRENA FlexTool 3 in multi-node grid modelling. The case study is one of six case studies published in the OASES project (part of LEAP-RE).

OASES project (part of LEAP-RE)

The OASES project is developing an open ecosystem for energy system modelling between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU). The project consists of satellite detection of renewable installations, climate-based estimation of renewable potential, and the integration of this open data into energy system modelling. The project aims to promote sustainable energy solutions and solve energy challenges in Africa by facilitating long-term exchange of expertise in energy, modelling, and data processing. Detailed instructions for running dataset with IRENA FlexTool 3

  1. Install IRENA FlexTool 3 using instructions from: irena-flextool.github.io
  2. Launch Spine Toolbox and open IRENA FlexTool3 workflow
  3. Download OASES_Egypt_national_case_study.sqlite, and select the file as the Input_data database in the Spine Toolbox workflow
  4. Ensure database compatibility with the latest version of tools by running the update script, instructions: irena-flextool.github.io under "Updating IRENA FlexTool"
  5. Select the scenarios you wish to run using the scenario filter
  6. Run tools Export_to_CSV, FlexTool3 and Import_results
  7. View run results in Results database or export the results to Excel by running the To_Excel tool
