Multivalent identities : examining the articulation of Sheedi identity in digital media

This thesis is focused on the articulation of Sheedi Identity in Digital Media. I examine three pieces of digital media from YouTube: a documentary titled “Kings without Thrones - Sheedi Badshah”, a documentary titled “Life Along the Coast,” but uploaded as “(Sheedi) Deeply Life of Pakistani Black People,” and an Instagram live interview titled “#BlackLivesMatter: The Pakistani context. My research questions are as follows: How do Sheedis understand their identity? How do Sheedis understand their identity in relation to Non-Sheedi Pakistani people? How do Sheedis understand their identity in relation to Africa and the Africa Diaspora in South Asia and beyond? In this study, I argue that Sheedis have multivalent identities; Sheedi identity is rooted in connections to an imagined Islamic past, notions of African heritage, and local Pakistani cultural contexts. Sheedis accept their Pakistani identity, Islamic heritages, and African heritages, while recognizing the precarious nature of their position in society due to legacies of racism and slavery.
