Marechera turns language upside down, yet displays extraordinary stylistic virtuosity and Western erudition. He subverts narrative strategies in a tangle of meaningful snatches with no unifying story-line. He was accused of betraying his African roots. The paper argues that he drew on both his Western cultural heritage and African tradition in the experimental production of a discourse that underscores through their negation the universal human values he aspired to.
