New strategies for initial reading, so that Africa's children can read with understanding.

In many African countries about 80% of children cannot learn to read in the early grades, they only memorise lessons and pretend to read year after year. One reason is that they are confused with WRITTEN English second language (ESL) in Grade 1, and have to learn reading in two languages simultaneously. They cannot, and can also not learn enough ESL to understand what they later read or memorise in ESL. New approaches to initial reading, and to learning ESL, can change literacy in Africa hugely, but authorities want poor children to remain ignorant and manipulable.
