Nutrigenetic risk stratification in autism spectrum disorder: evidence from a scoping review in South Africa

The scoping review aims to systematically map and synthesise existing literature on nutrition-related risk stratification and personalised nutrition approaches in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of how nutritional interventions, including nutrigenetic and nutrigenomic considerations, are conceptualised and applied within this population. Using established scoping review methodologies and including both peer-reviewed and grey literature, the review will examine key biological pathways, types of interventions, and approaches to personalisation. It will identify patterns, inconsistencies, and gaps in the evidence, particularly in relation to clinical applicability and the use of genetic information. The expected outcome is a structured evidence map that summarises current knowledge, highlights limitations in the literature, and identifies areas for future research. These findings will inform the study’s retrospective component and contribute to a clearer understanding of the role of personalised nutrition and nutrigenetic approaches in ASD.
