Occupational Health Hazard among Nurses in Umar Sanda General Hospital Bida, Niger State, Nigeria

Occupational health hazards remain a major concern among healthcare workers, particularly nurses who are routinely exposed to biological, physical, psychological, and environmental risks in healthcare settings. The objective of this paper was to assess Occupational Health Hazard among Nurses in Umar Sanda General Hospital Bida, Niger State, Nigeria using appropriate standard methods including a structured questionnaire. Findings revealed that 75.0% of respondents had knowledge of environmental health hazards, while 93.8% acknowledged that such hazards could adversely affect patients’ health. Needle-stick injury was the most commonly reported occupational hazard (81.3%), followed by work-related stress (57.5%) and blood splashes (51.3%). Preventive practices were generally high, with 97.5% reporting the use of personal protective equipment, 93.8% adhering to safety guidelines, and 87.5% reporting hazard-related incidents. However, 85.0% indicated that hazard allowances were not regularly provided. The study concludes that nurses possess good knowledge of occupational and environmental health hazards and generally adopt appropriate preventive measures.  However, the need for continuous occupational safety training, strengthened hazard surveillance systems, and improved welfare support for nurses is required.
