On Adposition Phrases in Dagara^*

Abstract This paper proposes a reanalysis of adposition phrases expressing locations in Dagara. It has been observed in the literature that locative adpositions are postpositional in Dagara, which is arguably a head‐initial language and does have a preposition as well. This paper examines the behavior of what has been analyzed as postpositions with respect to stranding, case marking, focalization, and number marking and argues that they should be analyzed as nouns heading noun phrases. In addition, it is argued that noun phrases headed by the nouns in question are accompanied by an empty preposition.
