Performance optimization techniques in dashboards, especially in healthcare, are necessary to improve user experience and ensure real time analysis for informed decision making. While the majority of healthcare stakeholders in low resource settings operate on unreliable or low-bandwidth connections, it should not affect their ability to access routine reports, download data sets or synchronize aggregated indicators. This paper discusses the performance optimization techniques used improve the performance of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) dashboard focusing on caching, query redesign and optimization, and improvements in the user experience. The improved performance was measured using browser tools to track API calls, payload, latency, largest contentful paint per page, and user feedback from workshops. The use of caching and API redesign tremendously improved system performance. Despite additional API requests and charts, the new dashboard performed faster than the existing dashboard, thereby improving overall user experience.
