Clinical research in South Africa depends on trust: between participants and researchers, between investigators and institutions, between the scientific community and the public.
When oversight systems work by blame and surveillance, they undermine that trust. Investigators hide strain. Problems accumulate in silence. Participants bear the consequences.
When oversight systems work by evidence and support, they strengthen that trust. Investigators can acknowledge when they are stretched. Problems surface while they are still manageable. Participants are protected earlier.
Ultimately, this work aims to shift clinical trials in South Africa from a culture of punishment after failure to one of prevention, support, and resilience, because that is what participants deserve, and what researchers need.
