Pattern of Socio-Economic Deprivation and Welfare in Kwara North Senatorial District, Kwara State, Nigeria

Rural Development is a determined and conscious attempt to focus on the upliftment of man's living conditions in the rural areas. This study examined the pattern and multidimensional nature of socio-economic deprivation in Kwara North Senatorial District, Nigeria. All the five predominantly agrarian Local Government Areas (Baruten, Kaiama, Edu, Moro, and Patigi) were studies. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 441 household heads, who were surveyed using a semi-structured questionnaire. A deprivation index, adapted from the Human Development Index (HDI), was used to measure deficits across key welfare variables. The study revealed severe and systemic deprivation across all measured domains: a majority of households (46.9%) earned below the poverty line, there was a neartotal lack of access to electricity and postal services, 75.8% relied on unsafe water sources, 76.4% lacked access to modern healthcare facilities, and adult illiteracy was mild (48.5%). In stark contrast, community cohesion was identified as a relative strength, with high participation in community-led projects. The study concludes that Kwara North Senatorial District suffers from profound spatial inequality and political-economic marginalization, trapping its population in a cycle of deprivation despite its significant agricultural role. Recommendations include urgent need for targeted policies that address infrastructural deficits, improve market access for farmers, and leverage existing community social capital for sustainable development interventions
