Abstract
Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, this paper explores how perceived information security can accelerate the adoption of digital agricultural extension services in rural Nigeria. The study delves into how farmers' perceptions of information security influence their readiness to embrace digital platforms for agricultural extension services. The successful integration of digital technologies into agriculture, particularly in rural areas with low technology knowledge and trust, hinges on addressing security issues. Key UTAUT model constructs-performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions-were scrutinized in relation to perceived information security through a survey among rural farmers. The study reveals that farmers' actual uses of digital extension services, as well as their intention to use them, are significantly influenced by perceived information security. Furthermore, it demonstrates that a strong sense of security fosters confidence in digital platforms, thereby motivating farmers to utilize these technologies. The findings suggest that enhancing digital adoption in rural agricultural extension programs in Nigeria is contingent on improved information security and heightened awareness of data protection. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the socio-technical dynamics that shape technology adoption in developing nations, offering a hopeful outlook for the future of technology in rural Nigeria.
