Perception of Old Age among Yoruba Aged

Survey of 432 Yoruba aged 55 and above on their perception of old age illustrates the crucial role of the cultural milieu in determining the functional definition of old age and in identifying factors important for life satisfaction in later years. The results raise important issues regarding the applicability of the theories of successful aging to a transitional society where the economic and psychological support of adult children is indispensable to an aged’s survival.
