This dataset contains the supplementary Appendix A materials for Hartmann & Nichols, “The Euro-African Transition Zone: Findings from geospatial phonology.” The Excel file contains the language sample and phonological complexity data used in the paper, including language names, genealogical classifications, geographic coordinates, ETZ classification, coded phonological variables, and source information. The accompanying Word file contains the bibliography for the language-specific sources used in compiling the dataset.
The data were used to investigate large-scale geospatial patterns in phonological complexity across languages in Africa and Europe, with particular attention to the Euro-African Transition Zone and the role of latitude in the distribution of phonological complexity.
