Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is the UK’s innovation agency. Our mission is to help companies to grow through their development and commercialisation of new products, processes and services, supported by an outstanding innovation ecosystem that is agile, inclusive and easy to navigate.

Launched in 2019, Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa (GAA) is an UK International Development initiative, funded by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The programme aims to build stronger equitable UK-African partnerships to maximise the creation of inclusive market access, funding and investment opportunities, and collaborative innovation between the UK, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya.

The project aligns with the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) objectives by building stronger local innovation ecosystems and enhanced UK- Africa collaborations that lead to self sustaining economic growth in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa by the potential of innovation to meet current and future socio-economic challenges.

Within this project, one of the most successful interventions in South Africa was the Place-Based Innovation (PBI) intervention. This toolkit, alongisde informative videos about the intervention, capture how PBI was designed and implemented in Gauteng, South Africa. The aim is to share learnings and methods to recreate similar initatives in future, to maximise impact from innovative activities.
