Poverty mapping at the scale of African cities

Most of the urban growth is expected to happen in Low-and-Middle Income Countries (LMICs), mostly in deprived urban areas (commonly known as slums or informal settlements).  Monitoring the growth, persistence, and diversity amongst deprived urban areas remains one of the primary goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This requires spatially explicit and accurate data. However, such data are commonly not available at global and local scale. To bridge such data gaps, IDEAMAPS developed a data-driven framework to map and characterize deprived urban areas. This framework was implemented and adapted to Khartoum, Sudan to support local decision-making. IDEeAMapSudan built together with local stakeholders a data ecosystem, which is openly accessible via a Geonode. The Geonode (geonode.idea-maps.net)  provides data on urban deprivation in support of local actions and SDG 11 monitoring.
