Marine turtle nesting grounds are under imminent threat due to coastal habitat reduction caused by urbanization, rising sea levels, and pollution. This study surveyed 62 sandy beaches in Cabo Verde, one of the world's largest loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) rookeries, to evaluate these threats. Utilizing aerial drone surveys, we created orthophotos and digital surface models to assess marine litter pollution, vegetation coverage, and topographical features. We then modelled the suitability of loggerhead turtle nesting habitats by analysing nest locations in relation to topographical variables and vegetation proximity. By overlaying these models with sea level rise projections and current marine litter pollution data—assuming constant pollution levels—we predicted future nesting area availability. Our findings indicate a significant future reduction in suitable nesting areas. Integrating habitat suitability models with sea level rise and marine litter pollution projections provides critical insights into the potential impacts on sea turtle nesting grounds, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.
