Preface

Welcome to AFRIGRAPH 2001, the very first International Conference on Virtual Reality, Computer Graphics and Visualisation in Africa! This conference is the main event for this year of the newly formed African Graphics Association AFRIGRAPH - - and is in co-operation with ACM SIGGRAPH and Eurographics.Africa has a growing computer industry and virtual reality, computer graphics and visualisation are set to have a significant impact on all sections of society in the near future. In March 2001, a high-level delegation from ACM SIGGRAPH and Eurographics visited Southern Africa to help establish Computer Graphics and Interactive techniques as leading Southern African research and application activities. The purpose of this visit was to meet key people in industry, universities and funding agencies to discuss:1. The establishment of AFRIGRAPH to actively promote computer graphics and interactive technique activities in Africa.2. The sharing of educational knowledge and resources for education in general to meet the future demands for skilled people in the area.The mission was a resounding success - full details can be seen at: .More than fifty submissions were received from all over the world for this conference. Thank you to all the authors who submitted papers. Unfortunately, because of the limited time of the conference, we were only able to accept less than half of the submissions. These papers form the high scientific content of this conference and these proceedings.
