Prevalence, determinants and health system implications of discharge against medical advice in sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review

This scoping review maps the reported prevalence of discharge against medical advice (DAMA) across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), alongside its determinants and health system implications. In doing so, the review makes the following contributions. First, this review enriches the understanding of DAMA by situating its occurrence within the broader health system dynamics of SSA. Second, by comprehensively mapping the drivers of DAMA in the region, the review reveals entry points for interventions aimed at improving patient retention. Finally, this review identifies gaps in existing evidence, reveals under-investigated areas and proposes new avenues for future exploration of this topic.
