Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum among Out-Patients Attending Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Complex (Oauthc) Ile-Ife

This collaborative research investigated the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum infection among out-patients attending Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The study aimed to assess the burden of malaria within the patient population while examining demographic trends and public awareness of malaria prevention and control.

A total of 100 out-patients were screened for malaria using peripheral blood film microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). Structured questionnaires were also administered to collect demographic information, clinical history, previous malaria incidence, and participants' knowledge and perceptions of malaria, including its symptoms, causes, severity, and preventive practices.

The study identified a Plasmodium falciparum prevalence of 23% among the study population, with infants under five years of age and pregnant women exhibiting the highest burden of infection. The findings reinforce the continued public health significance of malaria in Nigeria and highlight the importance of sustained preventive strategies, early diagnosis, and targeted interventions for vulnerable populations.
