Prevalence, prevention practices and predictors of cardiovascular disease among public health worker in north-central Nigeria

This study aimed to determine the prevalence, prevention practices and the predictors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among health workers in public health services in Bida, Niger State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study design was used, with data collected using semi-structured self-administered questionnaires. The data retrieved were analysed descriptively and with multivariate logistic regression. A total of three hundred and one health workers in public health services in Bida, Niger State were approached to participate, with a response rate of 100%. Only 19.6% of the respondents had good CVD prevention practices. Age, sex, and family history of stroke were predictors of good CVD preventive practices.  Also, age, ethnicity and income level were predictors of having at least one CVD risk factor. The cardiovascular disease prevention practices among health workers in Bida, Niger State, Nigeria was poor, despite being thought to have information on health. Hospitals and health facilities should create enabling environments for exercise and make yearly medical check-up mandatory for their staff. The health workers also need to make their own health a priority, not to be neglected.
