Africa will need more than an Asian style Green Revolution. Africa’s farming systems are far too complex than the narrow cereal production systems of the green revolution. Africa is the perched continent. Soils are inherently infertile and respond poorly to inorganic fertilizers. In a post green revolution, Africa must leverage integrated approaches, harnessing ecological assets, enhancing genetic fitness of a diverse range of crops and designing responsive and well-coordinated public and private sector institutions, including farmer associations to increase productivity, profitability and sustainability of agriculture.
