This study covers a sample of 24 sub-Saharan African countries over the period 2005 to 2016. The choice of sample and period is related to the availability of data on both poverty and microfinance variables. The poverty data are taken from the Poverty and Equity Database and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), while the microfinance data are taken from MIX-market. In addition, data on electoral democracy and institutionalized democracy are from Freedom House and Polity IV, respectively. The other variables are constructed using data from the World Development Indicators (WDI).
