This chapter examines the resilience and sustainability of smallholder farming systems in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with a particular emphasis on Ethiopia. Historically, traditional agricultural systems in this region have maintained a symbiotic balance between crop cultivation and livestock rearing, fostering sustainable ecosystems. However, contemporary farming practices have disrupted this equilibrium, leading to a compartmentalized approach that threatens the sustainability of these systems. This chapter underscores the critical integration of crop and livestock systems as a strategy for optimizing resource utilization, enhancing productivity, and improving livelihoods. It assesses the influence of spatial factors such as topography, elevation, aspect, weather extremes, and market proximity on resource distribution and agricultural practices. Furthermore, it explores the socio-economic and cultural contexts of smallholder agriculture, highlighting the role of livestock in diversifying income and providing buffers against economic and environmental shocks. The complex dynamics of mixed crop-livestock systems are examined, demonstrating their efficacy in maximizing resource use, promoting sustainability, and bolstering food security. The chapter concludes by addressing the challenges and opportunities for enhancing the resilience and sustainability of smallholder farming through adaptive management practices, supportive policy frameworks, and targeted research and development interventions, advocating for a holistic approach to sustainable agricultural development in SSA.
