Revolutionizing Rural Vaccination Access in Nigeria for Children: Why Current Strategies Fail

A good percentage of the population of children living in rural areas in Nigeria are zero-dose children. This means they are yet to receive any of these life-saving vaccines. Many families in rural communities face different challenges in accessing vaccines for their wards, like lack of awareness, financial constraints, parental hesitancy, location and geographical restrictions. Current strategies employed by local, national and international organizations to bridge the gaps in zero-dose vaccinations continue to face limitations. In this opinion review, I conducted literature reviews/searches and extracted information from publicly available sources like Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and NLM/NCBI to highlight the challenges of receiving vaccinations, critically analyzed the success rate of current intervention plans and efforts while providing insights into more innovative, holistic and sustainable strategies to employ. This opinion review article also proffers recommendations that will not only address the challenges but improve the health status of a population.
